Grammy 2013 – Best Surround Sound Music Album

The 55th annual Grammy awards are over and among many categories there is one for best surround sound music album. And the winner is…

Patricia Barber with Modern Cool!

Modern Cool was originally released in 1998 and was praised by Jazz critics and audiophiles alike. Luckily for us surround sound aficionados producer Michael Friedman and engineer of the original recordings Jim Anderson decided to go to Skywalker Sound and create a Blu-ray Audio with a new stereo mix and an all new 5.1 surround mix.

The 192kHz / 24bit PCM stereo track and the 96kHz / 24bit DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track can be accesed with the yellow and red buttons on your remote, so you don’t need to turn on the TV or monitor to play back the Blu-ray.

And how does it sound? Immersive! The listener is placed in the middle of an imaginary stage with the instruments playing all around. Definitely an experience not to be missed and a Grammy for best surround sound music album well deserved.

Congratulations to Patricia Barber, Jim Anderson (surround mix engineer), Darcy Proper (surround mastering engineer) and Michael Friedman (surround producer) 🙂
