Primus – Sailing the Seas of Cheese Blu-ray

Sailing the Seas of Cheese, the second studio album of Progrock band Primus, is coming to Blu-ray with a surround sound mix.

Primus is an acquired taste and definitely not a mainstream band. Trying to categorise them is a fruitless undertaking. Is it Trash-Funk? Progressive Metal? Alternative Rock? Progressive Rock? Funk Metal? In any case, the music of Primus is most certainly funky and not devoid of some sense of humour. Try at your own risk!

With the Sailing the Seas of Cheese Blu-ray Primus is releasing a deluxe edition of their major label debut album, which will include a CD with the stereo re-mixes and a Blu-ray with the 5.1 mixes at 96kHz / 24 bit in both Dolby TrueHD and PCM. Plus there are 3 previously unreleased bonus tracks.

Earth to record companies, physical media is dead. Come up with a simple download format if you want anyone to buy surround music. I’m still surprised that DTS or Dolby haven’t done this yet.

    1. I think when it comes to stereo, you’re right. Portability and ease of use are more important to listeners nowadays. But for surround we might be awhile off until the shift to downloads happens. We have a great format with multi channel FLAC (as available on this site 🙂 ) but bandwidth and ease of use are issues. None of the popular software players (iTunes, Amarra, Decibel, Audirvana, Pure Music,…) can handle sourround files. So for most people, loading up a Blu-ray or SACD is the easiest way to enjoy surround sound music. I hope this will change soon, though!
